Liquid metal (Fig.1) is a promising coolant for fast reactors and fusion reactors due to its excellent heat transfer and nuclear characteristics. However, the material compatibility between liquid metal and structural materials is a critical issue. As such, we have proposed a “function-sharing interface structure” to protect against the corrosion of structural materials in a liquid metal cooling system (Fig. 2), in which anti-corrosion layers developed are maintained by a self-healing function. This is essential for the long-term operation of cooling systems.
